Strategic Partnership Formed with SIM and iDEC

December 2019 - Strategic Partnership Formed with SIM and iDEC

The Inclusive Digital Era Collaborative (iDEC)in collaboration with the Professional Development Research Institute (which includes SIM) was awarded $120,000 to conduct research and professional development activities as a result of a competitive bidding process through Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). Funding is a result of ESHB1109, passed this year, which provides dollars to implement professional development to support inclusionary practices in Washington schools. “This is the first project of its kind and will make great strides in informing policy and practice in online learning environments,” said Kelsey Ortiz, iDEC director. “Little is known about the extent to which students with disabilities are able to access general education curriculum, specially designed instruction, and special education supportive services,” Ortiz said. The project will combine a series of descriptive research activities with targeted professional activities for virtual school special educators. “SIM seemed to be a natural partner for this project,” said Ortiz. “Jocelyn and the SIM team hold the keys to ensuring virtual school teachers are provided high quality professional development despite working in a nontraditional learning environment.”
