LS PD Requirements for those with an XR PD Credential


For Xtreme Reading Professional Developers wanting to become Learning Strategies Professional Developers, we've attached a table below of revised requirements, as you've already achieved many of the requirements for the LS PD credential through your Xtreme Reading Certification.

Action Items for those who already hold an Xtreme Reading Professional Development Certification

  1. Apprenticeship Reflection

  • It is optional to attend a formal institute.
  • Please list the name of the SIM Professional Developer with whom you will be working on your LS PD Credential. This person also may have been your XR PDer. (Note: If your PDer is not an LS PDL, KUCRL will do a final review to approve your choice of PDer.)
  1. Co-Plan and Co-Instruct
  • Plan and co-instruct a SIM Overview and one non-reading Learning Strategy Professional Development Session.
  • Post the Following:
    • Presentation used (Power Point),
    • Planning agenda,
    • Observation notes provided by the SIM Professional Developer as feedback,
    • PD session evaluation and results
  1. FAQs Assignment  
  • Submit responses to 15 of the 30 SIM FAQs listed.
  1. Learning Strategy Expertise

  • Write a general comparison/reflection of what the difference is between implementing XR and implementing instruction in one of the original Reading Learning Strategies. (Guided Reading, Paired Practice,8 vs 10 stages, etc).
  • Attend PD and implement an 8-Stage Writing Strategy. If you can’t implement a Writing Strategy, do another 8-stage, non-reading strategy (Note: If you have an LS Fidelity of Implementation badge, you can simply provide the link).
  • Provide ONE student folder for the non-reading strategy that you implemented. 
  1. Professional Learning Plan
  • Develop a written plan for implementation of Learning Strategies in your department/school/division/region, state. Include initial PD, instructional coaching and technical assistance for administrators to ensure infrastructure support.  Be sure this plan is LS, not XR focused.
  1. Data-Driven Planning
  • Contact simpd@ku.edu for a link to the overview video, SIM LS Tools and How to Select Them
    • The overview video is about the process for supporting schools and teachers in making data-driven decision to select SIM Learning Strategies.
  • Watch the video and answer follow-up questions. 
  1. Any Additional Evidence (Optional)

  • Provide evidence of experiences that you wish to share about instruction in non-reading strategies (such as coaching data, interview with a teacher, etc.)
