Spotlight Stories from Florida Educators

From breakthrough moments in the classroom to districtwide transformation, these stories illustrate how SIM is helping students and educators succeed across Florida.

1. From Study Hall to Strategic Learning

Impact: Student Success & Empowering Educators

For many Learning Strategies teachers, classes once focused primarily on helping students keep up with homework. After implementing SIM Learning Strategies, those same classrooms became places where students learned explicit reading and writing strategies that could be applied across content areas.

Teachers reported that students made measurable gains on pre- and post-assessments, while students themselves shared that they enjoyed using the strategies and felt more successful in their classes.

"SIM transformed our Learning Strategies classes from simply helping students get through assignments to teaching them how to become strategic learners." ~TK

2. When Students Ask for the Strategy

Impact: Student Success

One high school student made a breakthrough that every SIM educator hopes to see. After learning the Sentence Writing Strategy and Paragraph Writing Strategy, he asked his teacher if he could take his strategy resource sheet to school to use during writing assignments.

The request came before the class had even reached the generalization phase of instruction.

His teacher knew something important had happened: the student had independently recognized the value of the strategy and was choosing to apply it beyond the classroom.

"The connection to real life was made on his own. He saw that the strategy could help him succeed, and he wanted to use it." - RA

3. The Writing Strategy That Changed Everything

Impact: Student Success

A teacher implementing Fundamentals in Sentence Writing watched students who had earned a zero on the pretest steadily build their skills and confidence. Many improved to 50% or higher, and some reached 100% mastery.

The most exciting moment came when students began transferring their learning to general education English classes. During a lesson on infinitives and prepositions, students successfully applied concepts they had learned through the strategy. Their English teacher was so impressed that she sought out the Learning Strategies teacher to find out how the students had learned the material.

"It was proof that the learning wasn't staying in one classroom—it was becoming part of how students approached writing." ~ MC

4. SIM's Impact Beyond Graduation

Impact: Long-Term Student Success

Years after leaving high school, a former Learning Strategies student unexpectedly reunited with his teacher at a restaurant while celebrating a family birthday.

The former student proudly introduced his wife and son and shared how the writing strategies he learned years ago still play a role in his life today.

"My wife is attending college, and I help edit her papers using the writing strategies you taught me." ~ MM

Now a successful restaurant manager, husband, and father, he credited those skills as part of his journey.

For his former teacher, it was a powerful reminder that SIM's impact often reaches far beyond graduation.

5. A Skeptic Becomes a Champion

Impact: Empowering Educators & Systems Change

When one Florida district adopted SIM as the curriculum for all Learning Strategies classes, not everyone was enthusiastic. One veteran teacher had spent years refining an approach she believed worked well for her students and was resistant to changing course.

Reluctantly, she agreed to give SIM a chance.

Within weeks, she began seeing positive results and wanted to learn more. Her initial skepticism transformed into enthusiasm as students responded to the strategies. Over time, she became one of the district's strongest advocates.

A decade later, she is a certified SIM Learning Strategies Professional Developer, helping other educators experience the same success.

"What started as resistance became leadership. Seeing student success changed everything." ~ TK

6. Building a District-Wide Culture of Strategic Learning

Impact: School and District Success

Over the past several years, Clay County has invested heavily in SIM implementation across multiple initiatives.

Teachers across grade levels participated in professional learning focused on Strategic Math, SIM Learning Strategies, Inferencing, and literacy interventions. Coaching and ongoing support helped educators move from training to implementation.

What began as targeted professional development evolved into a sustained, multi-year commitment to strategic instruction. The district's Learning Strategies teachers now consistently use SIM strategies, while new training opportunities continue to expand implementation.

"Teachers are eager to learn more, eager to implement, and eager to see the impact on students." ~ RA

7. From Teacher Training to Student Success at Orange Technical College

Impact: Empowering Educators & Student Success

When Orange Technical College experienced an increase in adult learners with disabilities, many instructors needed support in understanding how to effectively meet those students' needs.

Drawing on SIM Learning Strategies, one educator worked with instructors to strengthen practices related to self-determination, self-advocacy, and test-taking.

Teachers reported that students who learned how to set goals, monitor progress, seek help, and use strategies during certification exams were more likely to complete programs and earn industry credentials.

"These strategies gave teachers practical ways to support students while empowering learners to become more independent and successful." - IC

8. Growing Florida's SIM Leadership Network

Impact: Scaling Impact

One of the most significant outcomes of SPDG support has been the development of local leadership capacity.

Through the grant, FDLRS Region 4 certified ten new SIM Professional Developers and two SIM Specialists while supporting additional apprentices preparing for certification.

This growth created a stronger infrastructure for sustaining professional learning across multiple districts and ensured more educators would have access to high-quality SIM training in the future.

"The impact extends far beyond a single classroom. It builds a network of expertise that can support educators and students for years to come." ~ JC

9. A School-wide Language for Learning

Impact: School Success

At one secondary school, SIM implementation began within the mathematics department. As teachers observed positive results, the use of Content Enhancement Routines expanded into additional content areas.

Soon students encountered Unit Organizers, Frames, and Concept Mastery devices across multiple classrooms.

The result was more than consistency—it created a common academic language shared by students and teachers throughout the school.

"Students knew what to expect and how to use the routines regardless of the class they were in. Teachers became more collaborative, and learning became more connected." - SS

10. The Power of a Community of Practice

Impact: Empowering Educators & School and District Success

Pinellas County has built a thriving SIM community of practice through sustained professional learning and collaboration.

Each summer, 6–12 teachers from mathematics, science, and social studies participate in Content Enhancement training. In a recent year, more than 120 educators attended workshops on seven different routines.

The impact extends beyond training sessions. Teachers return annually to collaborate, refine routines, share implementation strategies, and support one another as practitioners.

This ongoing investment has strengthened teacher capacity while creating more engaging and effective learning experiences for students.

"SIM professional learning became more than training—it became a community committed to improving outcomes for all learners." ~ FS
