SIM Class: Course First!
Teachers juggle heavy content demands, academically diverse learners, constant responsibilities, and frequent interruptions. They need tools that are powerful, efficient, and proven to help them reach every student. SIM Content Enhancement Routines (CERs) meet that need. Built on scaffolded supports for students with disabilities, these research‑validated routines improve outcomes for all and make course standards more accessible by clarifying critical content and increasing student confidence and engagement.
The Course First! Content Enhancement Routines online course introduces a modern approach to SIM professional learning. It shifts instructional planning toward strategically integrating CERs across an entire course to support the full learning journey.
With Course First!, educators begin by developing a Course Organizer using the SMARTER Instructional Cycle. They plan units of instruction, embed CERs such as the Course Organizer and Unit Organizer, and learn additional routines—Concept Mastery and Framing—to address content demands.
Designed around adult learners, Course First! builds on teachers’ expertise, boosts confidence in implementation, and provides the planning and reflection time needed to incorporate CERs into current practice. Participants learn four SIM CERs—Course Organizer, Unit Organizer, Concept Mastery, and Framing—along with the Cue‑Do‑Review Instructional Sequence. These routines make course standards more accessible by clarifying critical content and increasing student confidence and engagement. The course supports teachers in identifying overarching learning goals, using the SMARTER Instructional Cycle to map the path toward them. Participants also explore the five strands of CERs to identify additional routines they may want to learn in the future.
