SIMposium Session: Trauma Informed Instruction: How does it relate to SIM?

Wednesday, July 12 - 10:00-11:30 am

Presenters:

Jean Schumaker

Session Description:

In this session, Jean Schumaker, who has been a certified trauma therapist for 24 years, will define trauma and present a new paradigm for understanding “mental health” and “mental illness.” She will draw connections between SIM instruction and trauma-informed instruction, which are important connections in the aftermath of the pandemic, during which so many children became traumatized.

To prepare for this session, participants might review the characteristics of their students who were not able to profit from SIM instruction because of the many symptoms they were expressing.

Outcomes: Participants will:

  • Understand what trauma is.
  • Understand the consequences of trauma.
  • Understand a new paradigm for treating trauma.
  • Understand how trauma-informed instruction fits in that paradigm.
  • Understand how SIM instruction provides many of the characteristics of trauma-informed instruction.
