SIMposium Session: What are OTRs and Why Should You be Using Them?

Wednesday, July 12 - 1:00-2:00 pm

Presenter:

Gwen Berry

Session Description:

As teachers and professional developers we understand how important it is to engage our audience.  However, did you know that there is a significant body of research supporting the use of Opportunities to Respond (OTRs) as a means of engagement?  What rate of OTR is associated with increased academic achievement and higher active engagement for students, and what does this mean for us as presenters? In this session you will: a) learn about the major research findings on OTRs gathered from over 10,000 teachers in the state of Kentucky; b) practice using different types of OTRs, and c) learn about resources for helping yourself and the teachers you work with increase student/participant engagement!

Participant outcomes:

  • Define OTR and summarize major research findings
  • Learn and practice different verbal, non-verbal, and partner-team engagement strategies

Use resources from the Center for Instructional and Behavioral Research in Schools and the National Center on Intensive Intervention for increasing your use of OTRs.
